Clay Deanhardt
After graduating from East Carolina University and Harvard Law School , Clay Deanhardt began a career in law and entrepreneurial businesses in San Francisco . By the mid-90s Clay had focused on high technology law, focusing on firms and businesses in California ’s Silicon Valley . In 2001, Clay launched his first business as President, General Counsel and a member of the Board of Directors for Epidemic Networks, a start-up networking company founded in Santa Barbara . He subsequently started his own successful legal and business consulting firm, Deanhardt Consulting, until being asked to return to Covad Communications Company as Assistant General Counsel.

Among his accomplishments, Clay led a telecommunications industry team that combined legal and operational strategies to develop and deploy disruptive technologies that made broadband services more available and affordable for individuals.

Clay now operates the Law Office of Clay Deanhardt, providing high-quality, low-cost services focused on achieving concrete business results. He advises individual entrepreneurs, small and large businesses on legal strategies designed to bring them business success.

Dick Gonzales
Dick Gonzales currently is lead principal for Finepoint Associates, a firm specializing in Human Capital Management issues during mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to establishing Finepoint, Dick was the Senior Vice President-Human Resources for Safeway Inc. a $46 Billion, 203,000 employee food retailer operating 1,738 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. In that position Dick was responsible for all Human Resource activities throughout the Corporation. While in this role Dick was chief strategist for several innovative human resource initiatives that provided the many core business units with organizational infrastructures that lead to improved employee competencies and skill levels. These achievements provided consistent gains in productivity, performance, quality and service. His leadership as the architect of a distinctive diversity initiative culminated in Safeway receiving Fortune magazine’s award for 50 Best Companies for Minorities (2003, 2004 & 2005) and Women (2005). He was also responsible for Safeway being recognized by Forbes magazine as a Leading Company for a Diverse Workforce (2006) and receiving the prestigious Catalyst Award for the Advancement of Women in the Workplace (2006).

Prior to Safeway Dick held senior positions with Group Health of Puget Sound, (an HMO), with Burlington Northern, Inc.(a Holding Company), Burlington Northern Railroad Company (Rail Operations), and IBM (Manufacturing). Dick holds a Bachelors Degree from the University of Colorado - Boulder and an MBA from the Drucker Center, Claremont Colleges, Claremont, CA.

Dr. Lou Moret
Dr. Louis F. Moret was appointed to a four year term to the Board of Administration in February 2008 by the Assembly Speaker, the State Senate Rules Committee, and the Assembly.Dr. Moret brings more than 30 years experience in public administration and finance to the CalPERS Board. He presently serves on the Investment, Performance and Compensation, Finance and Policy Benefits and Program Administration Committees, as well as on the Policy Subcommittee of the Investment Committee.

Dr. Moret is a former board member of the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension Board. He was first appointed to the board in 1991 by Mayor Tom Bradley, and served under three other mayors. He also served as President and Vice President of that Board, as well as the Chair of the real estate and investment committees. During his tenure, the pension fund grew from 65 percent funded to full funding. Dr. Moret has also served on numerous private and non-profit boards including the First Bank of Beverly Hills; Amervest, a fixed income asset management firm; The East Los Angeles Community Union; JT 2 Corporation, a workers compensation service provider; and Lat-TV, a low-power television station serving the Hispanic community; and Diamond Contract Services, Inc., a comprehensive janitorial services company.

He is also an Adjunct Professor of the Graduate School of Public Policy at Pepperdine University. Dr. Moret was also a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1981-93, and served as Chair of the Hispanic Caucus from 1982-84. He is also a founding board member of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials and served on the board of directors of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute from 1985-1990. He has been a delegate to every Democratic Convention since 1984.

For more than 15 years, Dr. Moret served as Chief Operating Officer at the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), the largest regional planning organization in the United States. Prior to joining SCAG, he was Vice President of Cranston Securities Company, where he specialized in public finance and interacted extensively with finance directors, city managers and other officials in state and local government. In 1979, he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter and confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as the first Director of the Office of Minority Economic Impact in the Department of Energy. He also served as Commissioner of the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Chief of staff for Assemblyman Richard Alatorre and Deputy Director for the United States Office of Minority Business Enterprise.

He earned his Doctor of Public Administration from the University of La Verne, his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, and his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Whittier College. He is also a recipient of a Professional Designation for Senior Managers in Government from Harvard University.

Dr. Moret is a licensed Professional Boxing Referee and has officiated in over 115 World Championship Fights. Dr. Moret has five grown children and resides in Los Angeles with his wife.

Martin Cabera
Martin Cabrera, Jr. is Chief Executive Officer and owner of Cabrera Capital Markets, LLC (CCM), one of the premier investment banking and institutional brokerage firms located in the heart of Chicago’s Financial District. Cabrera Capital Markets, Inc. has underwritten over $55 billion of municipal bond transactions and maintains a broad spectrum of clients ranging from the municipal government level to Fortune 100 Corporate clients. (The State of Illinois, City of Chicago, the State of California, and the City of Houston). CCM holds a seat on the Chicago Stock Exchange and is a leader in institutional brokerage for public and corporate pension funds from across the country.

A native Chicagoan, born and raised on the city’s south side, he graduated from Bogan High School. He earned his degree in Finance from Northern Illinois University. Martin studied at the London School of Economics in England, where he traded on the London desk for Merrill Lynch International Ltd. Cabrera began his brokerage career as a registered representative with Olde Discount Stockbrokers going on to work as a portfolio manager with the Corporate Securities Group. Subsequently, he went on to become Senior Vice President with Amerivet Securities, Inc. and a branch manager for Salomon Grey Financial before starting Cabrera Capital Markets.

Through years of experience and knowledge in the brokerage field, Cabrera has built one of the most respected and leading companies in the industry. He has been cited with an award for “Outstanding Recognition” by the Securities Industries Association and Chicago United’s “Business Leaders of Color Award,” in which he serves on the board. Also, serves on the Region Board of Directors for the Bond Market Association; and was named one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics of 2004 by the Hispanic Business magazine. A recognized leader in the state and business community, Martin serves on the 2016 Chicago Olympics Committee, Advisory Board, US Bank, Los Angeles Economic Development, New Mexico State University Entrepreneurial Board, Board of Directors for the New America Alliance, as well as the Board of Directors for The Partnerships for New Communities, Civic leadership for Chicago’s neighborhoods. Mr. Cabrera Co-Chairs the New America Alliance, Pension Fund Initiative, and is President of Midway Council. Martin most recent award was from the US Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). Martin was named the 2007 Minority Business Advocate of the Year. The Chicago Region’s MBDA and the Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Council honored the top local and regional Minority Businesses and Minority Business Advocates at its annual Gala, which was held on August 24th, 2007. Committed to serving the community that has given so much to him, Martin has volunteered with many civic and charitable organizations including tutoring for the Mid Town Boys Center; the Chicago Public Schools “Principal For A Day” program; and a confirmation teacher with St. Pancratius Church; Salvation Army volunteer.

Active with the Boy Scouts Of America, Martin has served as District Chairman for the River Trails District and sits on the Board of Directors to the Chicago Area Council. Mr. Cabrera is also a board member of the Northern Illinois University Alumni Association, and a member of the board of trustees of the Illinois Council on Economic Education, an organization dedicated to teaching young people the importance of economics in society and creating the business leaders of tomorrow. It was the Council’s “Stock Market Game” that prompted Martin to pursue his investment banking career and set him on the path to success that he follows to this day.

Ysabel Duron
Ysabel Duron is an award-winning journalist now in her 38th year in television broadcasting. Duron is the senior anchor of the Weekend Morning News on KRON TV4 in San Francisco and has occupied that chair for 18 years. In 2005, Duron was named one of the 26 Most Influential Latinos in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the San Francisco Business Times. Both her broadcasting and non-profit work have been recognized over the years. In 1997 she was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences “Silver Circle” for more than 25 years of meritorious work as a journalist. In June 2006 she received the President’s Award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for her commitments to journalism and community.

In 1998, her 3 part series on her own winning battle with cancer {Hodgkins Lymphoma}, won an Excellence in Journalism Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. She’s won two EMMY’s, one for her coverage of the Patricia Hearst Kidnap. The California Teachers Association gave her its highest honor, the John Swett Award, for her 3 part series “Trouble with Teachers.” In 1991 she won first place from the Radio TV News Directors Association for her 3 part series, “The Child I Never Held,” about her personal reunion with the son she gave up for adoption.

The California Chicano News Media Association presented her with its highest honor in 1999 for her commitment to coverage of the Latino community. The Chicana Latina Foundation presented her with a Living Legacy Award in 2002. The year before, the Bay Area Latino Media Association named Duron a Latino Media Pioneer. And finally, in 2006 she was presented with the President’s Award from the National Hispanic Media Association for her distinguished career and service to community.

After her battle with cancer {Hodgkins Lymphoma ‘98 , Ysabel Duron, helped start one non-profit (2000) in San Jose, CA serving Latinas with breast cancer. In 2003 she founded a second, Latinas Contra Cancer, which she continues to run. LCC raises awareness around issues of cancer to reduce mortality and improve the quality of life by increasing access to quality health care. It helps grass roots groups grow capacity to provide service, and devises culturally and linguistically appropriate education tools for the mass Latino market. It’s bilingual website offers cancer resources, and referrals. In July 2008, LCC convened the first of its kind National Latino Cancer Summit bringing together 325 researchers, administrators and community members from 21 states to explore collaboration on issues related to Latinos and cancer.

In San Jose, she was awarded the Girl’s Scouts highest honor, the Juliette Gordon Low award, as well as the Janet Gray Hayes award, named after the first woman mayor of San Jose, both for her community work.

Duron is a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum, and a Board member of the International Women’s Media Foundation, empowering and enhancing women journalists globally. In June 2007, she was voted one of the 100 Most Influential Latinos in Silicon Valley. She was also honored with an individual award as the Most Influential Latino in Media. In 2008, Zero Breast Cancer of Marin County presented Duron with the Francine Levien Activist Award in honor of the group’s founder.

Roberto Medrano
Roberto Medrano is a recognized executive in the field of Internet security. He helped to create the firewall, content security, and security policy segments of the security market. Mr. Medrano was an active member on President Bush’s National Security Advisory Committee, National Cyber Security Summit, The White House National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, and participated in President Clinton’s White House Security Summit.

Mr. Medrano has extensive experience with start-ups and large companies and was the CEO of PoliVec, a leader in security policy. Prior to PoliVec, Inc. Mr. Medrano was one of the top 100 Sr. Executives at Hewlett Packard . At Hewlett-Packard (HP) he was General Manager of the E-Services and Internet Security Divisions. As Division general manager for Hewlett-Packard, Medrano served a vital role as head of HP's key strategic emerging businesses. Some of these efforts included Internet security, middleware, management, web services, CRM, and E-commerce. Under his leadership, Medrano grew several teams from zero to more than $30 Million in a very short time with a combined total of $200 Million. Prior to joining HP, Medrano was president of Finjan, a leading security software firm. He also served as vice president of Milkyway Networks (IPO 1996), a firewall pioneer, and has held executive positions at Avnet Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc.

Medrano has been selected as one of "The 100 most influential Hispanics in 2001" and is co-founder and CEO for Hispanic-Net, www.hispanic-net.org, a non-profit organization. Mr. Medrano has started at the beginning of 3 industries: Electronic Design Automation, Open Systems and Computer Security. Mr. Medrano is a member of Technet. He is currently on the board of directors for Hispanic-Net (www.hispanic-net.org), Golden Gate and National Hispanic Universities, National Financiera NAFIN and has served on the boards of www.arcot.com , www.bigfix.com , www.netscaler.com , www.pivx.com , www.encentuate.com , www.Clearpathnet.com , www.panaceasoftware.com , www.commendo.com and www.sandhillsecurity.com. Medrano holds a master's degree in business administration from the University of California at Los Angeles , a master of science degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California.

Martín Ahumada
Martín Miguel Ahumada is the President of the International Center for Higher Education & Philanthropy (ICHEP), a nonprofit corporation dedicated to working within a truly global context in strengthening educational institutions, promoting the culture of philanthropy, and preparing a new and more diverse generation of educational administrators, policymakers, and instructors. His top priority is in establishing the Corporate Roundtable for Intercultural-International Education (CRIE) as a powerful new vehicle for uniting and mobilizing the “corporate world” and individual philanthropists around the ICHEP Corporation’s unique “global” educational efforts.

Martín Ahumada is currently spearheading several long-overdue initiatives aimed at expanding the intercultural and international dimensions of educational institutions in the U.S. and other countries—and at transforming the world into a better place through the power of philanthropy. In addition, he is working to establish the International Forum on the Financing and Development of Education, which will focus on policies and tools for the financing of collegiate institutions as well as state and national systems of higher education—and on proven strategies for forging presidential agendas and especially for promoting innovation in higher education systems and institutions. Also, Mr. Ahumada is working closely with his wife Iveliz and the ICHEP Corporation’s Board of Trustees on the creation of a much-needed Families of Faith Foundation, which will be dedicated to helping individuals and families to better know and practice their Catholic faith. This unique Foundation will always operate under the aegis and control of the ICHEP Corporation.

Mr. Ahumada has served as a faculty member with Harvard University's Graduate School of Education and several of Harvard's professional training institutes, in addition to serving as a lead instructor for renowned training programs in Latin America. He also served as a guest faculty member with Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he taught and conducted research on the management of schools, colleges, and other nonprofit organizations. Mr. Ahumada received his Bachelor's degree (in Spanish Literature/Political Science) from Carleton College in Minnesota and his Master's and Ph.D. degrees (in Higher Education Administration) from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He later served the University of Arizona as a professor of higher education administration, as the President’s liaison to all Arizona community colleges, and as Director of International-Intercultural Education.

Martín Ahumada was the first Vice President for Education & Research with the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU), where he worked closely with The White House, members of Congress, leaders of the corporate and philanthropic sectors, and the presidents of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in spearheading new national efforts to improve HSIs. These efforts focused on new research, leadership development, and other initiatives to strengthen the overall capacities of HSIs to better serve Hispanics. During his stint with HACU, Mr. Ahumada and Eleanor V. Horne of ETS designed and launched the HACU-ETS Policy Fellowship Program.

An expert on higher education policy and management, Martin Ahumada has held key policy-development or advisory roles at the international level with universities and educatio ministries in various countries; at the national level with NAHE, HACU, the Education Commission of the States, and the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association; and at the state level with the California Postsecondary Education Commission. With the California commission, Mr. Ahumada chaired several state-level task forces and committees that established new state policy in the areas of assessment, financing, diversity, and educational excellence; and he was the senior researcher on a landmark nationwide study of collaboration between community colleges and universities.

Martín Ahumada is the author of numerous publications addressing a wide variety of higher education issues. His writings and ongoing research address such topics as: diversity in higher education; educational excellence and equity; student financial aid and tuition policies; state-level governance and coordination of higher education; formula budgeting and incentive financing; costing and cost-analysis; the assessment of student, program and institutional outcomes; inter-institutional transfer and articulation; strategic planning; institutional capacity building; higher education data bases and information systems; His current writing interests center on (1) the art and power of transformative leadership; (2) a reinterpretation of the history of American higher education; and (3) the value of international perspectives and models for improving the policy leadership and strategic management of higher education in different national setting.

Martín Ahumada has earned many distinguished awards, including: MAEOPP's 1984 "Outstanding Alumni Award; The 1985 Outstanding Young Men of American Award"; The 1988 "Tomás Rivera Award"; The University of Arizona's 1990 "Outstanding Faculty Award"; Harvard University's 1994 "ALANA Faculty Recognition Award"; The University of Arizona's 1994 “Distinguished Citizen Award”; The 1994-95 "Who's Who Among Hispanic Americans Recognition Award"; and Carleton College's 1997 'Alumni Award for Distinguished Achievement." Among Hispanics in U.S. higher education, he is widely known as a true Hispanic pioneer in his field—for he was the first Hispanic to: (1) earn a Ph.D. in the field of higher education finance, from the nation’s top program in the field; (2) serve as a professional employee of the Education Commission of the States and the California Postsecondary Education Commission, and (3) serve on the faculty of the Harvard Department of Higher Education and the University of Arizona’s Department of Higher Education.

Martín Ahumada completed his K-12 schooling in Tucson, Arizona, where he was raised. He and his wife lveliz—who is a native of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico—have two daughters, Litzaya and Melibea. The Ahumada family resides in Tucson.
